It filters 99%+ of contaminants including dissolved salts (ions), particles, colloids, organics, bacteria, and pyrogens from the feed water. A carbon filter will also remove contaminants from your water, but it does so at a much lower rate than a reverse osmosis system. This is especially true of microscopic organisms, which are a big concern for those with compromised immune systems. 

It’s More Affordable 

Compared to fridge water filters, reverse osmosis (RO) systems cost more upfront. However, they don’t need to be replaced as often as refrigerator water filters do. Plus, the quality of water produced by RO systems is often more than enough to justify its cost.
